After four years of fans waiting, chapters 3 and 4 of the video game Deltarune were released on June 5th, 2025, by game developer Toby Fox. Chapters 1 and 2 were both free when they were released in 2018 and 2021, but now Chapters one through four cost $25. Is the game worth the new price?
Deltarune is a single player role-playing game (RPG), meaning that the player controls one or more characters. In this case, the player controls three different characters. It takes place in a “light world” made up of humans and monsters, and a “dark world” made up of a wide variety of fantasy characters. Each character has depth and a meaningful story to tell. In the story, the apocalypse and three heroes have been prophesied for a long time. These heroes become the three characters the player can control, leaving them wondering if it’s possible to save this world and conquer fate.
However, the game is not fully finished; with seven total chapters and three more to come out, fans are left with many questions: What are the characters’ true identities? Their motives? Is the player really in control?
Toby Fox breaks the fourth wall with his games, and Deltarune is no different, leaving it with an intrigue and depth that most games don’t have. The four chapters that have already been released tell one of, if not the most compelling story I’ve ever seen in a game. Fox’s writing and storytelling skills are unique. He can create both hilarious and tragic scenes of equally high quality.
Fox is better known for his creation of Deltarune’s alternate reality, Undertale. Undertale is another RPG Fox creation, though he was much younger and less skilled during its development. Deltarune shows the same high-quality storytelling, but with drastically improved coding, gameplay, and visuals, thanks to the help of Temmie Chang, the main artist/animator and cocreator of both games.
Deltarune’s game mechanics are aimed towards a broader demographic of skill levels, but this comes with some flaws. There are some parts of the game that may be painfully slow for those of a higher skill level who want more of a challenge, yet other parts that are too difficult for those that play for the story. However, this is simply the consequence of appealing to a larger audience, and the developers have smoothly blended easy and difficult sections together.
Three Deltarune players were interviewed, all of whom would like to remain anonymous. The first participant agrees with the skill of Fox’s character writing.
“Toby Fox has an excellent ability to create very lovable characters with memorable designs and a world that feels both whimsical and immersive.”
Another participant played the whole game and expressed their admiration for the story.
“The constant [mystery] underneath the fun and adventurous story is just so cool, I just need to find out what happens in the future chapters.”
They also emphasize that the cost of the game was very worth the “ten plus hours of content.” The last participant played through chapter one and disagreed with the price of the game.
“I wouldn’t pay any more than $20 for it, especially if I didn’t already know how good the game is.”
While $25 is quite expensive for a game, when you consider Toby Fox’s previous works, there is ample evidence to show that the price of Deltarune will become more than worth it.
Overall, Deltarune is a wonderful game with unique gameplay and storytelling. This game is great for anyone looking for a good story, since the gameplay is very inclusive of many skill levels.
You can find the game available on Steam for $25.00, but if you aren’t patient or easily dedicated to a game franchise, it’s a good idea to wait until all seven chapters are released. With three more chapters on the way, Chapter 5 being released in 2026 — and the game already being incredible — Deltarune has certainly earned my approval.
Hopefully, it can earn yours, too.
