Chipotle VS. Cancun: Which one is better?

By Amelia Willems

In Eau Claire, Chipotle and Cancun are both popular options if you want to grab some Mexican food. Chipotle is a classic food chain all over the world and Cancun is a charming local restaurant. They both serve Mexican food, but Chipotle is more Americanized Mexican, whereas Cancun serves more traditional Mexican food. Most people go to Chipotle when they want some healthy fast food, but Cancun is more of a restaurant that people go to when they have more time to sit down.

Both Cancun and Chipotle describe their food in similar ways, but some people may argue that there are some clear differences. At Chipotle they serve “Real food with real ingredients”. At Cancun, they describe their food saying “Cancun Grill’s provides a classic Mexican menu using only the best ingredients which proudly includes many vegetarian & vegan options.” Some of the most popular menu items from chipotle are burrito bowls, burritos, quesadillas, and tacos. Cancun also serves similar items, they are known for their fajitas and queso sauce.

In my opinion, I enjoy both places. When I am looking for some fast Mexican food, I typically go to Chipotle for a burrito bowl or quesadilla. I do think the food is a bit overpriced for what you are getting. On the other hand, I also really like Cancun. I like to go to Cancun for dinner with my family or friends and have a nice sit down experience. They give you some chips and salsa when you arrive and I think that is a good touch. If I had to pick one I would choose Cancun, the food is better quality and the service and experience is a lot better than Chipotle.

When interviewing others at Memorial, the conclusion is people like Cancun better. When asked which restaurant they prefer, Molly stated “I like Cancun better because the all around vibes are just so much better than Chipotle,” This theme seemed to be the case all around when I asked people their opinions. Another point people brought up was that they liked the food better at Cancun because it was higher quality and a better deal for the amount of money you are playing.

Another question I asked when interviewing people was what queso they liked better. Most people also voted that the queso from Cancun was better than the queso from Chipotle. They also liked that chips are included with your meal at Cancun, as at Chipotle it is an extra charge if you want chips.

In conclusion, although I like Cancun better, I would recommend both Cancun and Chipotle. Chipotle is perfect when you need something fast and Cancun is perfect for when you have more time to sit down and enjoy your food. They are both greatly enjoyed by many different types of people, especially high school students. Both of the restaurants are in Eau Claire and relatively close to Memorial High School. In Eau Claire, Chipotle and Cancun are both popular options if you want to grab some Mexican food.
