Saturday, September 28, the night of Memorial High School’s Homecoming dance, was a fun but also absurd time for Memorial students. The Old Abes had fun dancing songs like “Fein” by Travis Scott, hanging out with friends, and maybe going out for some unlimited soup and salad at Olive Garden. However, it was a surprise for everyone when the fire alarm suddenly went off, and students were temporarily escorted out of the building.
“The fire alarm went off because of the DJ fog equipment,” says Mrs. Christina Schroeder, an instructional coach at Memorial. “[Our DJ] does DJ at other schools like Chippewa Falls and Altoona. But our system just happens to be really sensitive.”
When asked about what the fire department did when they arrived at the scene, Schroeder responded, “[the fire department’s] job is to check out the area, make sure it’s all clear, [so] they’re able to see what triggered the alarm.”
Some students had mixed reactions about what happened that Saturday night, but most found humor in the situation. “The fire alarm went off for 2 minutes before the DJ noticed,” says Lilah Staupe, a junior at Memorial. “Everyone was laughing about it. Then, when [the DJ] said the fire alarm was going off, the tune changed and everyone ran off.”
So, there you have it Old Abes: this year’s homecoming dance was the most lit one yet. Fortunately, as mentioned before, this situation was caused by the fog equipment being used by the DJ that triggered the fire alarm, and nobody was in danger due to the event.
